Beverly Hills Cop was the basis for three movies, but more significantly, it marked the conclusion of a string of hits that catapulted Eddie Murphy into the stratosphere of movie stars, following in the footsteps of “48 Hours” and “Trading Places.”

Here we have “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” which, as Murphy moves into the encores-for-streaming phase of his career (see “Coming 2 America”), manages to overcome its poor spots with a healthy dose of unapologetic nostalgia (cue the soundtrack).

There may be cause to wonder why the film is making its Netflix premiere rather than its theatrical debut given the box office performance of the most recent “Bad Boys” sequel, but that’s a topic for another article.

As he returns to a role he introduced ten years earlier and said goodbye to thirty years ago, the actor immediately projects competence.

Like “Coming 2 America,” “Alex F” uses a next-generation hook to grab the viewer’s attention and give Murphy’s Axel Foley a cause to travel back to Beverly Hills from Detroit, where he meets up with a lot of old friends (after an action-packed opening sequence that goes on a bit too long).

The main theme of the story is introduced by a younger Detroit coworker who observes that Axel continues to live on the streets while “guys your age” are getting desk jobs. Murphy does a great job at portraying his alter ego’s perspective.
