Is the stock market open or closed on July 4th 2024? See full holiday schedule. In honor of Independence Day, U.S. stock markets will be closed on Thursday, July 4, and will close early on Wednesday, July 3.

The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will reopen on Friday, July 5, after closing at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association announced that the U.S. bond market will close early on Wednesday as well, at 2 p.m. ET.

According to a letter written by John Adams to his daughter Abigail, the Library of Congress, the Fourth of July got its start when Philadelphians observed the first anniversary of American freedom with a “spontaneous celebration.”

But it wasn’t until after the War of 1812 that the Fourth of July was observed on a regular basis. At that time, things like groundbreaking ceremonies for the Erie Canal and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad were planned to take place around the holiday.

On June 28, 1870, a legislation was approved by Congress designating Independence Day as a federal holiday.

Wall Street will reopen for business as usual on July 4th and remain open until early September. In celebration of Labor Day, the stock market will close on Monday, September 2, as planned.
