John Deere Classic 2024

Hayden Springer shot a 12-under 59 in the opening round of the John Deere Classic, making him the 14th player on the PGA Tour to achieve a sub-60 performance.

On the last green, Springer holed a birdie that broke the 60-bird mark from just outside 12 feet, and he carded eight birdies and two eagles.

At TPC Deere Run, the 27-year-old American shot an eight under 27 on the front nine, the lowest nine-hole score on the Tour since 2000. After that, he was silent for a few holes. When he birdied the par-five 17th hole out of the rough, he was nine under through sixteen holes.

That put him within one birdie of the elusive 59. He found the center of the eighteenth fairway with his second shot, which he made about 12 feet from the pin, and he drained the putt.

Less than two weeks have passed since Cam Young made history at the Travelers Championship by shooting the first 59 since 2020.

Together with Adam Hadwin, Scottie Scheffler, Kevin Chappell, Brandt Snedeker, Justin Thomas, Stuart Appleby, Paul Goydos, David Duval, Chip Beck, and Al Geiberger, Jim Furyk owns the PGA Tour record with a 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.

I feel fantastic. After signing his card, Springer remarked, “I am kind of at a loss for words in terms of being able to do that.”

It’s one of those uncommon occurrences in golf, so to seize the chance and succeed is quite remarkable.

The ability to accomplish it is unique. Although I performed well last week, it has been difficult to find anything, start things moving, and go low.

It’s unique. I played a great round of golf, and it feels nice to be standing here.

“I honestly didn’t think I could make that shot [on 17], but I did, and it changed the flow a little bit.

Despite missing seven of his previous nine cuts, Springer managed to finish 10th in the Rocket Mortgage Classic last week.

He has never won on the PGA Tour and is now ranked 236th in the world. He became a professional in 2019, but last December, he managed to go back on tour through Q-school after losing his card.
