Onimusha: Way of the Sword is a Japanese-inspired dark-fantasy sword-action title set in early Edo-period Kyoto. The city has been consumed by a dark curse, and a plague of demonic Genma has overrun the streets.
The protagonist is the legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who was killed in battle against the Genma. He is resurrected by the Oni Gauntlet, becoming an Onimusha—a demon slayer with supernatural power. Despite this second chance, Musashi is reluctant to rely on borrowed strength and seeks to remove the gauntlet while battling the demonic forces threatening Japan.
Miyamoto Musashi is a real historical figure known as Japan’s greatest swordsman. In this game, his appearance is modeled after the legendary Japanese actor Toshiro Mifune, who is famous for his roles in Akira Kurosawa’s samurai films such as Seven Samurai and Rashomon.
The combat in Way of the Sword is described as deliberate and timing-based, rewarding precision over mindless button-mashing. It focuses on:
The boss fights are considered one of the strongest elements of the game. A standout mechanic involves bosses that become more corrupted and dangerous the longer they survive in battle. Players can choose to weaken this progression or deliberately drag out the fight for more rewards.
Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine powers the game, bringing a dark-fantasy Kyoto convincingly into the modern era. The engine allows for expressive character animations and detailed environments.
The game supports NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 and AMD FSR 3.1 upscaling technologies on PC. A free PC benchmark tool is available on Steam and the Epic Games Store to test system performance.
